Poppies

There’s been a fascinating project underway at the Tower of London this summer (2014).

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War, the Royal Palaces have been planing ceramic poppies in an art installation entitles “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red” in the Tower’s moat. The project started on the anniversary of the war’s outbreak, with poppies being planted each day until, on Armistice Day 2014 there will be a poppy for each British military fatality during the war… 888,246 poppies in total.

After Armistice Day the poppies are being sold, with proceeds benefitting military charities. Ours is already on order.

At the start of October, on one of the last sunny days of the ‘Indian Summer’, we drove up to London to see the installation.

These are the pictures I took that day.
