In The Garden

(Alan Jackson) – Meadowcroft Garden Centre

We’ve been regulars at Meadowcroft Garden Centre for many, many years. To the point where most of the staff say ‘Hello’ and some know us by name; a sure sign we spend too much time (and money) with them.

It’s a great garden centre, always well stocked with excellent plants, gifts and garden paraphernalia.

Their Christmas displays are always interesting and while there are larger garden centres in the vicinity (along the A127 springs to mind), Meadowcroft is always our first stop.

It’s worth mentioning Sharon and her team of florists at ‘Flowers in the Meadow’ who produce some interesting and innovative arrangements.

However, today we were in need of a breakfast, and a friend who works nearby frequently posts his breakfast photos on social media.

We arrived a couple of minutes after the 11am breakfast cut-off, but they obliged, a ‘Greedy Gardeners’ breakfast for me, and scrambled eggs on toast for the missus. Filter coffee for me and hot chocolate for the missus. £11.45 the lot – great value.

The restaurant, it must be said, has a ‘staff canteen’ vibe about it; the furnishings are utilitarian. There are a few tables outside in the garden centre, and I’ve seen patio heaters out there when the weather is cooler.

My ‘Greedy Gardeners’ breakfast comprised a fried egg with a runny, bright yellow yolk, two thick rashers of tasty bacon, two thick, meaty sausages, a small ramekin of baked beans, cooked mushrooms and a slice of toast.

Greedy Gardener’s Breakfast

The only disappointment was the two discs of ‘bubble  and squeak’ – next time I’d go for the hash browns. Val’s  scrambled eggs were piping hot, freshly cooked, and plentiful, served with plenty of toast.

We’d not eaten at Meadowcroft before. That said, it’s always good to find good, local food places serving quality ingredients, and we’ll certainly be going back.
