The Whale

(Electric Light Orchestra) – The Whalebone – South Woodham Ferrers

The Whalebone is one of the oldest buildings in South Woodham Ferrers, while most of the town was constructed after the nineteen seventies, it’s reported that there has been a pub on the site of the Whalebone for more than two centuries, although the current building dates back to start of the 20th century.

It’s another one of those pubs that I’ve visited occasionally over the last thirty years, we’ve attended a few bashes in the restaurant, which was relaunched as ‘Scrimshaws’ about ten years ago.

The Whalebone recently announced that they would be serving weekend breakfasts so, on a bright February Sunday morning I thought I’d I pay a visit.

Breakfasts are served in the main bar, rather than the restaurant, there were a few other people breakfasting when I arrived.

I took a seat and ordered the “Full Whalebone English”- which comprised 2 rashers of Bacon, 2 Cumberland Sausage, 2 Eggs (fried, poached, scrambled,) Black Pudding, Mushrooms, grilled Tomatoes, Hash Brown, Beans and two slices of white Toast.

There’s ‘help yourself’ mugs of Tea and (instant) Coffee.

My breakfast, when it arrived, was freshly cooked. The rashers of bacon were thick and tasty, the sausages meaty and the addition of a thick slice of black pudding a pleasant addition.

All in all a very good, and filling breakfast, a few tweaks would make it excellent.
