Bitter Withy

(Maddie Pryor) – The Withy Arms, Old Leyland, Lancashire

I was visiting some friends on Old Leyland and they suggested we go out for dinner, they know I’m interested in beer, and were keen to show me two local pubs just a few minutes walk from their home. The first (although furthest) of these was the Withy Arms.

It’s a bustling town/village centre pub with extensive menus of beers, lagers, food and (as seems to be the way these days) gin.

We’d reserved a table, which was just as well as at seven on a Friday evening the pub was heaving.

My friends ordered the curry of the day and a lamb chops respectively, while I ordered Fish & Chips – it was a Friday evening, so why not?

The dishes were all served promptly, pretty impressive for a pub with such an extensive menu. The portions were generous and the food delicious.

The beers were interesting and well kept, I confess I don’t recall what I drank.

The pub has a couple of interesting policies “No Urban Sportswear and No Swearing” which clearly keeps the youngsters out.

And there are extensive ‘outdoor’ areas out back.

My friend told me that the pub aspires to hosting its own microbrewery, they certainly have space, but that’s an ambition for the future.

For now, it’s a fine, welcoming ‘local’, I would be happy to have it five minutes from my house.
