(Bad Manners) – Searceys at 30 St Mary’s Axe
In the summer of 2016 I booked a lunch with Kit & Elaine at ‘Hutong at The Shard’ in London, it was one of those ‘three courses for thirty five quid’ deals and, but for the price of the drinks (I thought the wine was affordable until I realised they were quoting glass prices), we had an enjoyable lunch.

It was the last time we dined together with Val.
I digress, this was another of those lunch deals, at Searcey’s at the top of 30 St. Mary Axe, the ‘Swiss Re’ building, known to everybody as ‘The Gherkin’, a three course lunch and a drink for thirty five quid each.
We arrived early (twelve noon) for our twelve thirty lunch and negotiated the inevitable security checks.
Access to the 39th floor requires a change of lifts (IIRC) at the 34th floor.
Once we arrived at the 39th floor we were warmly greeted and shown to a table at the window, overlooking Bishopsgate and the Moorgate area.
The lunchtime ‘meal deal’ offers three selections each of starter, main and dessert.
Bread and butter was offered promptly, along with a carafe of tap water, and a Mimosa cocktail – another part of the three course offer.
I ordered a reasonably priced, and most enjoyable, bottle of rose wine.
For a starter I ordered the smoked salmon, which was delightfully subtle (and I’m learning a LOT about smoked foods), served on a delicious ‘super-seed’ multi-grain bread that ticked all the boxes. Kit ordered the Broccoli soup which he enjoyed greatly.
For mains, while Elaine ordered the spiced cod, Kit and I ordered the Venison with soy, ginger, pomegranate and miso glazed parsnips.
The venison portion wasn’t overly large, but was beautifully cooked – medium-rare – and the side vegetables were delightful.
Elaine described the baked spiced fillet of cod with turmeric roasted cauliflower and coriander as ‘exceptional’.
For dessert, Elaine chose the clementine sorbet, again described as delicious, while Kit and I tried the cheese of the day.
Again, not the largest of portions, but tasty and creamy.
After lunch we were invited upstairs to the bar to finish our drinks and enjoy a coffee and the spectacular views across London.
While the guys on the table next to us were clearly dining off the main menu, at no time did we feel that we were any less important to the staff or the restaurant, a nice touch.
The consensus was that we’d all enjoyed an excellent lunch, in sublime surroundings, at an impressive price.
I suspect we might be back.
